Friday Nights Bistro - O'Connor

After a short break, the Australian Croatian Club has re-opened it's Bistro for the traditional Friday night feast of "domaće hrana".

With the dining area having been given a minor facelift and the Bistro now operating under direct Club management, Friday nights at the Dom are sure to be a hit in 2010.

And who can argue with that, with grilled fish, brudet, steaks and of course the ever popular schnitzel forming just part of an affordable menu, the tradition of fine food at the Dom looks like it will continue for some time yet.

Big "Croat" Day out in Canberra

The local Croatian Community was out in force at Canberra's recent Multicultural Festival (which attracted in excess of 70,000 people) with two food stalls and countless numbers of community members enjoying a fun day out in the city.

With the Australian Croatian Club doing a brisk trade in Karlovačko beers and krajnski's, the Croatian Ethnic School's palačinke/kolače proving a popular hit, the local kolo group "Croatia" wowing audiences with their performances and Croatian Congress/Croatian Womens’ Association dishing out fine Croatian food and drink - brand "Croatia" was generating positive vibes throughout the day.

Besides the kolo performances, the most pleasing aspect of the day was surely the return to the festival of the "younger generation led" Australian Croatian Club and Croatian Ethnic School.  The fact so many Australian-born members of the community were willing to showcase Croatian culture and products clearly demonstrates the future of the community is in good hands.

Needless to say, with the popularity of the Australian Croatian Club's wide selection of Croatian liqueurs - a Club spokesman confirmed the Club would definitely return to the festival again next year.  After all, how could they disappoint the group of punters who were overheard stating ".... dudes you gotta go to the Croatian tent - their fire water (Loza) is really mad ....".

The activities in the Nation’s Capital never of course stop there, with locals enjoying last Sunday’s Valentine’s Day pečenje at the O’Connor Dom courtesy of Branko and Marija Frketic’s generous sponsorship and the O’Connor Dom’s Bistro reopening for Friday night meals tomorrow (19 February).

Sensational trading U turn at O'Connor

After recording combined losses of nearly $280,000 over the last three years, the Australian Croatian Club in Canberra announced a significant six figure profit for the 2008/9 financial year at its AGM held last Sunday.  The result reflected an amazing turn around when compared to the 2007/8 loss of $84,000 and was not only achieved off the back of the move to a volunteer work force and community donations, but more importantly a whopping 60% increase in bar/function revenue.

The result was even more impressive given the Club, as a sign of goodwill towards all those who supported it, refused to raise drink prices during the financial year and donated over 43% of its poker machine revenue to local community organisations.

The Committee whole heartedly thanked members for their increased patronage, support and donations.  The fact close to 200 members provided either physical and/or financial assistance to the Club in its time of need, clearly demonstrated there was, is and will continue to be a role for the Club in the Canberra and Queanbeyan region for the foreseeable future.

A particularly pleasing aspect of the result was it was achieved by a Club that:

•    proudly celebrated significant Croatian dates;
•    returned pictures of Croatian icons and symbols to the Club; and
•    worked cooperatively with other Croatian organisations in the Canberra and Queanbeyan region.

In doing so, the Australian Croatian Club proved being proud of one's Australian-Croatian heritage, culture and history is not only the right thing to do, but can be profitable as well.

Looking forward, the Committee is excited about 2010 with a detailed functions calendar released highlighting the Club's turn to host Canberra's Official Croatian National Day celebrations and Major Minor coming back to town over 21-23 May 2010 for "Hrvatska Fešta 2010".   But that's not all for the people down Canberra way, with members likely to get together in the coming months to vote on an exciting development that should ensure the Australian Croatian Club will prosper for generations to come.

“…e, e, bilo je dobro”.

2010 was welcomed in at Canberra’s Australian Croatian Club with a blast of a party.  With all tickets sold and Prva Liga putting on a sensational show, the night really will live long in the memory of those in attendance.    It really was hard to argue with comments from a group of older revellers that the night was reminiscent of the Club’s golden years in the 70s and 80s.

Special mention for such a brilliant night must surely go to  Prva Liga for their unbelievable performance, everyone who attended (especially the under 25s crowd who bring such vibrancy to Cro events) and of course the O’Connor volunteers who finished up way past 7am.

The night sure has set a high benchmark for the team at the O’Connor Dom.  However, with Major Minor booked to return to Canberra for two gigs as part of “Hrvatska Fešta  2010” (21-23 May) confidence remains high for some even greater nights in 2010.
